On Sunday 19 August 1792, in Moncoutant, the administrative centre of the Deux Sèvres canton, several hundred rural youths refused to accept the draw for "volunteers" to be sent to the frontier. They disarmed the few gendarmes present and ransacked the house of the administrator Puichaud. This was the start of a revolt that was to set the whole of the Bressui countryside ablaze for 6 days. But more than just a simple insurrection, this little-known event marked the first moments of the terrible Vendée civil war...
