The Université temps libre invites you to a lecture by Jean-Marie AUGUSTIN, Professor Emeritus at the University of Poitiers.
"Dress is sometimes governed by legal rules. In the Middle Ages, sumptuary laws prohibited the wearing of rich clothes in the name of modesty, inseparable from virtue, imposed by the Church. Other royal laws were protectionist measures designed to prevent the purchase of luxury goods from abroad (silks, lace). In 1793, the Convention proclaimed freedom of costume: "Everyone is free to wear whatever clothing and adjustments for his or her sex he or she sees fit". In Paris, an ordinance dating from 1800 required authorisation for women wishing to dress as men; it was not repealed until 2013. New clothing bans have recently appeared concerning the Islamic veil. The single veil (hijab) is banned in schools and for public service employees. A 2010 law banned the concealment of the face (niqab) in the public space.
