Adapting Les Misérables, a colossal work, is quite a challenge for a director.
Manon Montel has been working in depth on this adaptation for several years. To set this adaptation apart, we chose to give Madame Thénardier the role of narrator. An iconoclastic figure, she breaks the fourth wall with a popular glibness that speaks directly to the audience.
Thanks to the virtuosity of the cast, all the emblematic characters are embodied: the oppressed people, sublimated in Fantine's pain; the people as executioners, by the Thénardiers; Javert's inflexible justice, faced with the idealised justice of Monseigneur Bienvenue; Gillenormand's ageing bourgeoisie and the revolutionary future of the students portrayed by Enjolras, Courfeyrac and Gavroche, that Parisian boy who is both a symbol of misery and hope.
At the heart of this human whirlwind, the undying love between Cosette and Marius illuminates the prevailing darkness, while Jean Valjean, a mythical and universal character, embodies both the man in search of redemption and the father torn apart by his daughter.
Original music accompanies each scene, performed live by musicians on stage.
