      Around the year 1000

      It was at the foot of a seigniorial fortress situated near a river that the first inhabitants began to settle. Note the beautiful limestone from medieval times and what can still be seen of the town’s early history, from the Rue des Loges to the Parc Baron.

      Your enthusiastic guide will also show you the remarkable monuments and houses in the historic centre, the finest examples of Renaissance architecture around the600-year-old Church of Notre Dame. Take a diversion into the vaulted cellars for a truly immersive experience.

      Proud of its prestigious past, Fontenay-le-Comte, the only Town of Art and History in the Vendée, and also listed as one of France’s Most Beautiful Detours, is the département’s architectural treasure trove.

      Fontenay-le-Comte has preserved its medieval streets and aristocratic Renaissance houses with moulded stone facades from the 18th century. Discover the Place Belliard and its 17th-century arcades, the Hôtel de Grimouärd and the Hôtel Lespinay de Beaumont, the Church of Notre Dame and its crypt, the caryatids hidden here and there, the majestic gateway topped with the Laocoon…
