In New York at the end of Prohibition, Noodles takes refuge in an opium den after a job gone wrong. More than thirty years later, he is back in town and recalls his past as a gangster: from his youth as a hoodlum in the 1920s, marked by his meeting with his friend Max and their numerous deals in the city's Jewish ghetto, to the Prohibition period when their gang, bound by a deep friendship, grew rich and marked its rise in the underworld thanks to the illegal alcohol trade. Noodles also recalls his lifelong failed love affair with Deborah.
