Using examples from Fontenay, let's explore the history of urban housing from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The multi-purpose houses of the Middle Ages tell us all about the lives of merchants and craftsmen in the town, as well as the building methods and urban planning of the period. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the wealthy built mansions and apartment blocks in stone. The shape of the town underwent a metamorphosis, and soon the city walls were demolished in favour of urban sprawl. In the following centuries, in parallel with the industrial boom, workers' housing estates were built on the fringes of the old centres. Eight centuries that have shaped a protean landscape characteristic of many French towns.
