From Maillezais to Fontenay-le-Comte: between marsh and heritage.
You're slowly leaving Green Venice... but the adventure continues.
The first few kilometres follow the canals, to the rhythm of the water and its reflections. Head for the port of Courdault, peaceful and authentic, before reaching an essential stop-off point: the Petite Cité de Caractère of Nieul-sur-l'Autise.
Here, you can put your bike down.
The Abbey of Nieul-sur-l'Autise opens its doors to you, with its perfectly preserved Romanesque cloister. Right next door, the Maison de la Meunerie (Mill House) immerses you in a rare know-how: that of the last water mills still in operation.
You're off again... but not for long.
A diversion to Chassenon is just around the corner. A beach, a swim, a refreshing break: just what you need to get things moving again.
Then it's time for the little rewards. At La Balingue, a stop at La Lutine is a must to sample the local specialities. Frankly, it's hard to say no.
The last few pedal strokes bring you closer to Fontenay-le-Comte.
And then the atmosphere changes.
You're entering a Town of Art and History, renowned for its Renaissance heritage. Narrow streets, private mansions, elegant facades... Here, every stone has something to say.
It's a gradual journey through nature, food and history.
