Fontenay-le-Comte The cultural heart of the Vendée

Fontenay-le-Comte,a Town of Art and History and a member of the Most Beautiful Detours in France, is one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in the West.

The former capital of Bas-Poitou and the first prefecture of the Vendée at the time of the Revolution, the town has long been a major intellectual and humanist centre. In the XVIᵉ century, writers, printers and thinkers crossed paths here and shaped its influence.

Even today, it retains a remarkable heritage: mansions, churches, sculpted facades, arcades and alleyways bear witness to this flourishing period.

Situated at the gateway to the Marais Poitevin and close to the Mervent-Vouvant forest, Fontenay-le-Comte is an ideal base from which to explore the whole of the Vendée Marais Poitevin.
