Nieul-sur-l'Autise Travel in the footsteps of Eleanor

Between the Marais Poitevin and Fontenay-le-Comte, Nieul-sur-l’Autise takes you on a journey in the footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. A royal abbey, stone lanes, a working water mill and a peaceful river make up a unique adventure to be experienced in the Petite Cité de Caractère®.

The Royal Abbey of Saint-Vincent Where history takes over!

Founded in the XIᵉ century, the abbey is the beating heart of the city. Supported by Eleanor of Aquitaine, it became a royal abbey and shone for centuries.

Today, the Romanesque abbey church, convent buildings and intact cloister tell the story of the life of the canons and the spiritual power of the place. A must for history buffs.

The Maison de la Meunerie When the wheel never stops!

An 18th-century watermill… that’s still turning! Here, the paddle wheel drives the millstones grinding the grain, the oven smells of warm bread and skills are passed on.

Visits, workshops and a shop make the Maison de la Meunerie a lively, gourmet stop-off along the Autise.

Dwellings and alleyways To natural, luminous stone!

Place du Forail, merchants’ houses, limestone walls and discreet alleyways: the town is best discovered by strolling through it.

Each alleyway links a fragment of history, from the fairs of yesteryear to the houses of the bourgeoisie, in a mineral atmosphere typical of the Vendée.

Along the Autise...

Walk, breathe, explore

The Parc du Vignaud, a former seigniorial estate turned municipal park, offers a green interlude on the banks of the Autise. Here, nature meets history, just a stone’s throw from the town.

From the park, let yourself be guided by the river and follow the trail “In the footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine”. This loop links the abbey, the mill and the banks of the Autise in a peaceful setting. It’s an accessible walk, ideal for following in the footsteps of time, breathing deeply and experiencing the town in a different way.

The flour milling festival When the village goes back in time!

Every two years (Whitsun weekend in odd-numbered years), the town goes back in time. Around the mill, old trades, shows and scenes of life recreate theatmosphere of the early XXᵉ century.

A great popular moment, carried by the volunteers!
