A journey long before castles and kings
Before dungeons, before knights, before writing… there were already men and women capable of building for eternity.
La Ciste des Cous takes you back to that fascinating era: the Neolithic. Here, on a limestone plateau in Bazoges-en-Pareds, you’ll discover a funerary monument that defies time. Listed as a historic monument since 1959, this site is part of a larger complex: the Cous necropolis, alongside the Pierres-Folles dolmens.
A discreet place, but charged with a rare power.
One monument, 150 lives… and as many stories
Beneath this stone tumulus lies a startling reality: around 150 individuals have been found here.
Men, women, children… a whole community gathered in the same resting place. Excavations, which began in 1910 and continued throughout the 20th century, unearthed an exceptional collective burial site. Stone tools, bone objects, pottery (some of it intact)… so many traces that testify to a society that was already structured, organised, almost familiar.
You’re no longer just looking at stones.
You’re imagining lives.
Architecture designed for eternity
Come closer. Take a look.
Ciste des Cous is not just a pile of rocks and earth. It’s a carefully thought-out construction: a circular chamber, an access corridor, concentric walls… Every element has been thought out, arranged and mastered.
And that’s where the mystery thickens. How did these builders, over 6,000 years ago, conceive of such a structure? With no machines, no metal, no plans… just their knowledge, ingenuity and vision.
You are faced with a life-size enigma.
A walk between two worlds
Visiting Ciste des Cous is also part of a wider exploration. A few steps away, the Pierres-Folles dolmens extend your immersion. And all around, the Vendée landscape reminds you that this area has been inhabited for thousands of years.
Then, move on to another era. Head for the heart of the village, where the Donjon de Bazoges-en-Pareds awaits you. In just a few minutes, you’ll go from prehistory to the Middle Ages. From the first builders to the feudal lords… the journey continues, but the mysteries remain.
