A mill that never sleeps
Your mission begins on the banks of the River Autise at Nieul-sur-l’Autise, at the gateway to the Marais Poitevin. There, a wheel turns tirelessly, as it has done since 1728. Here, nothing stands still. The mill lives, breathes and still produces flour today. You soon realise that you are not in a traditional museum, but in a place in motion, where every mechanism has a function, every gesture a purpose.
As you enter, let your gaze fall on the gears and listen to the rhythm of the wood and water. The stage is set. You’re ready to follow in the miller’s footsteps.
In the footsteps of the miller… and his family
Guided by an immersive scenography, you’ll plunge back into the 1920s. Discover the daily life of the miller, his daughter Suzanne and even his cat Pompon, a faithful companion.
The spaces come to life as you follow a multi-stage sound trail. A voice calls out to you, a scene is revealed, an anecdote emerges. You move from the barn to the house, from the millstream to the mill. Each place tells a different facet of this simple but intense life, punctuated by work and the seasons.
Understand, touch, feel
At the Maison de la Meunerie, you don’t just look. You understand. How water becomes a driving force. How grain becomes flour. How each stage counts.
Sound and visual displays enhance your exploration, without ever undermining the authenticity of the place. The objects, often from the locals themselves, add a deeply human dimension to the visit.
And when the mill is in operation, the experience takes on a whole new dimension. Florent, the miller, shares his knowledge, explains the process and reveals the secrets of masterful production.
From flour… to gourmet pleasure
Your adventure doesn’t stop there. It continues with workshops and gourmet moments.
Take on the role of apprentice baker or pastry chef. Put your hand to the dough, shape it, observe it, wait for it… and then taste it. Leave with your creation still warm, a tangible reminder of your mission accomplished.
Before you leave, make a diversion to the shop. Flour, local products, sweets… here, you can take a bit of the story home with you.
