The legend of the fairy Mélusine

Some stories are not written in books. They can be read in stone, whispered in the alleyways or guessed from the top of a tower.

One of these legends has survived the centuries without ever fading: that of the fairy Mélusine . A mysterious woman, an extraordinary builder, a creature both fascinating and feared… Mélusine is no mere figure from the past. Her presence is still felt today in the Vendée Marais Poitevin, and even more intensely in Vouvant.

A curse at the origins of the myth

It all begins with a mistake… and a punishment.

The fairy Pressine, Mélusine’s mother, cast a spell on her three daughters for offending their father, Elinas, King of Albania. A sentence with far-reaching consequences.

For Mélusine, the curse is irrevocable: every Saturday, her body is transformed into the tail of a snake.

It’s a curse she’ll have to live with for the rest of her life… unless she manages to find a man capable of respecting just one rule: never seek to see her on that day.

A seemingly simple condition. But in legends, nothing is ever really simple…

Raymondin and the forbidden pact

The story unfolds during a day’s hunting.

Raymondin accompanies his uncle, the Count of Poitiers, in pursuit of a wild boar. The chase intensifies, the horses go wild and tempers flare… until the tragedy.

In the confusion, Raymondin strikes a fatal blow. But it wasn’t the animal he shot. It was his own uncle.

Shocked and overcome with guilt, he fled. Aimlessly. No bearings. He wanders for hours, perhaps days, through the forest of Coulombiers, racked by remorse and fear.

Then, at the turn of a clearing, everything stops. Three young women appear. Among them, Mélusine. Calm. Luminous. Almost unreal.

She walks up to him, speaks to him, and offers him a way out that Raymondin no longer expected: a new life. Power, wealth, prosperity… he can have it all.

On one condition. Never try to find out where she is going, or what she is becoming, every Saturday.

Exhausted, confused, fascinated… Raymondin accepts. Unaware that he has just sealed his fate.

A prosperity as brilliant as it is strange

After their marriage, everything changed.

Raymondin became one of the most powerful lords of Poitou. At his side, Mélusine unleashed her powers and transformed the land. In a single night, she built castles and fortresses, giving rise to iconic sites such as the medieval town of Vouvant and the castle of Mervent overlooking the forest massif.

Everywhere, her imprint shaped the landscape and imposed the power of the couple. But this prosperity came at a price.

Their union produced ten sons. Ten heirs… all marked by a singularity. One wears a single eye in the middle of his forehead, another has a lion’s claw on his cheek… all signs that intrigue, raise questions and fuel rumours.

And little by little, doubt began to creep in. One question keeps popping up. What secret does Mélusine try to hide every Saturday?

Betrayal and downfall

Some people around Raymondin are stirring up suspicion. They whisper, they hint, they push.

And above all… his own brother. Jealous and envious, he fosters doubt and stirs up suspicion. Day after day, he erodes Raymondin’s confidence, until his certainties are shaken.

And one day, Raymondin gives in. He breaks his promise.

Guided by doubt and manipulated by his brother’s jealousy, he follows her. He approaches the tower where she has locked herself in. In the silence, he forces the secret… and surprises her.

In her bath. Her long hair slides over her shoulders… but her body is no longer the one he knows. From the waist down, Mélusine has become a snake.

At that moment, everything fell apart!

Melusine's cry

When she realises that she has been betrayed, Mélusine lets out a terrible cry. A cry of pain, anger and betrayal. She rises into the air, disappears through the window, leaving behind a broken man… and an irreversible destiny.

Before disappearing, she utters these words:

“Pouzauges, Tiffauges, Mervent, Châteaumur and Vouvant will, I swear, perish by one stone each year”.

The curse had begun.
And nothing could ever stop it.

A legend that never dies

Since that day, Mélusine has never really left Vouvant. Some say you can still hear her on windy evenings around the Tour Mélusine. Others swear they have seen her, furtively, between the stones or at the top of the ramparts.

It’s impossible to know where the legend ends… and reality begins. But one thing is certain: her story has never died out here.

It lives on, in places, in stories… and in the eyes of those who take the time to observe.
