An abbey born of legend
Your mission begins in the heart of an ancient marine gulf, the Gulf of the Pictons. Yes, everything here was covered in water! In the XIᵉ century, Duchess Emma of Aquitaine founded an abbey on the island of Maillezais. The monks quickly became true builders of the impossible: they drained the land and gradually shaped what would become the Marais Poitevin.
But tranquillity never lasts long in a good epic. Attacks, fires, rivalries… the abbey survives the centuries like a hero in battle. It even became a cathedral before sinking, abandoned and then dismantled stone by stone. It was not until the 20th century that it was reborn, like a phoenix. A story worthy of the greatest sagas.
Enter a timeless setting
Today, a large part of the Abbey is in ruins… but not just any ruins. As soon as you arrive, you are drawn in by the power of the place. The cathedral impresses with its size and its blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Walk slowly. Listen to the stones. Thanks to the sound and interactive systems, you’ll be transported back to life in days gone by. Imagine the chanting of the monks, the bustling alleys and the great ceremonies.
Then comes the key moment of your adventure: the climb to the top of the cathedral tower. The view from the top is breathtaking. At your feet, the remains of the cathedral and cloister. All around you, the landscapes of the Marais Poitevin. The kind of view that demands silence… or a big “wow”.
Behind the scenes of monastic life
Your exploration then takes you to the cloister and annex buildings. Now gone, the cloister has been destroyed… but here, nothing really disappears. Thanks to the tour application, it is reborn before your very eyes in 3D.
Around it, the spaces that are still visible – refectory, kitchens, salt cellar – complete the immersion experience. You’re not just visiting a site: you’re reconstructing an era, piece by piece.
A living abbey
But the mission doesn’t stop there. At Maillezais Abbey, the past meets the present. In summer, the site comes alive with guided tours by night and sensory experiences, historical shows… The Abbey comes alive before your very eyes.
