Three quests, three unique ways to discover the Marais Poitevin
At dawn, in Saint-Sigismond, you enter a world still asleep. The mist floats on the surface of the water and the first sounds appear timidly. You move forward in silence, like an early explorer. Every detail counts. Every movement of nature becomes a rare spectacle. And your reward? A moment suspended in time… and breakfast in the heart of the marsh.
At dusk, at Le Mazeau, the mood changes. The light fades, the shadows lengthen and the marsh becomes more mysterious. The silence thickens, invisible eyes seem to be watching you. Some speak of a presence… a murmur in the canals. Here, the experience plays with your senses. You are no longer just a visitor. You’re an adventurer.
Immerse yourself in Maillezais and take action. With paddle or pigouille in hand, you’ll learn the skills of the boatmen. Those who have been shaping the marsh for generations. Test, feel and understand. And above all, you’ll discover the practical steps being taken to preserve this fragile land. It’s an experience where you’re no longer looking at the marsh: you’re part of it.
Understanding the fragility of the marsh
As your experience unfolds, one thing becomes clear. The marsh is beautiful. But it is fragile.
The pollarded ash trees, emblematic of the landscape, are now threatened by the Chalarosis disease. Their disappearance would upset the entire balance of the banks and canals. But nothing is set in stone.
Concrete action is being taken to preserve this heritage. Replanting, upkeep, passing on know-how… and recycling the material from the trees.
A memory that changes dimension
At the end of your adventure, you’ll receive a funny slice. A simple gesture… but one that takes on its full meaning.
This piece of ash is not there by chance. It comes from one of these well-tended trees, sometimes fragile, but always present. Transformed by a local craftsman, Benjamin Melin (cabinetmaker, joiner and the last remaining maker of traditional batais), it becomes a unique object.
A souvenir that tells a story. Of the marsh. The story of your experience. And perhaps also the story of a new commitment.
Because when you take this slice home, you’re taking away much more than a souvenir. You’re leaving with a mission!
