A cliff that has to be earned
Nestling in the heart of the Mervent-Vouvant forest, the Pierre Blanche cliff commands respect at first sight. Standing 34 metres high, it towers above the River Mère and Lake Mervent, offering a wild and spectacular backdrop.
After several years of work and expertise, the site has been restored to its former glory. Today, you’ll be climbing on a secure, fully-equipped natural rock face designed for self-sufficient climbers. Nothing is left to chance here, but everything depends on your skill.
A technical and challenging climb
Pierre Blanche is not a classic beginners’ area. It’s a demanding playground. The routes, ranging from level 4b to 7b+, are for climbers who can read the rock, anticipate their movements and manage their effort.
The cliff is divided into several distinct sectors, each offering its own challenges. A traverse crosses the wall, requiring vigilance and precision in movement. Below, intermediate belays help you manage your ascent. Above, the objective is clear: to reach the summit.
Each route becomes a mission. Each belay a step closer.
A living rock to tame
The rock, composed of micachist quartzite gneiss, has a unique texture. Neither too smooth nor too aggressive, it requires finesse and adaptation. The holds are not easy to come by: they have to be earned.
Western exposure also plays a key role in your strategy. In summer, the heat means early or late morning slots. In winter, it’s the afternoon that becomes your best ally for climbing on dry rock.
Here, you don’t suffer the elements: you learn to understand them.
An experience combining concentration and freedom
Climbing at Pierre Blanche means stepping out of your comfort zone. It means trusting your body, your equipment and your choices.
But it also means savouring a rare sensation: that of being suspended between sky, rock and forest. The silence, the emptiness, the concentration… and then the satisfaction once you’re at the top.
A suspended moment. A personal victory.
