3 heroic reasons to take the plunge!

Unlock one of the secrets of the Marais Poitevin

Understanding how water can ignite is almost alchemy… and you’re witnessing it live.

Experience something that surprises even the greatest explorers

Seeing a flame dance on water creates a real wave of surprise. It’s a rare moment, simple and spectacular, that triggers that little “wow” that you just can’t play with.

Sharing a special moment with your boatman

He’ll show you a unique gesture, share his know-how and take you into the history of the marsh. It’s an authentic encounter that gives the adventure a deeply human dimension.

Your adventure in detail

Boarding imminent

Your mission begins at a landing stage in the Marais Poitevin, where the traditional boats are waiting like horses ready to set off on an expedition. You climb aboard, guided by a boatman who knows the marsh like an old travelling companion. The flat boat glides across the calm water: soft light, pollarded ash trees, silence punctuated by a few birds…

The scene is set. You enter a world where every detail seems to invite you to become an explorer.

When the water catches fire

After a few minutes on the water, your boatman spots a suitable area. He plunges his paddle into the mud, stirs it with a sure hand… Bubbles of methane rise to the surface. He approaches a flame: the water ignites instantly. A tongue of fire dances, fragile and astonishing.

To prolong the moment, the boatman continues to stir the mud, trying to bring up more pockets of gas. Sometimes the flame lasts for a few seconds, sometimes it disappears straight away. Nothing is guaranteed, and that’s precisely what makes the moment so unique: every demonstration is different.

The boatman’s complicity

Fire on the water is not just a spectacular phenomenon: it’s also a moment of sharing. Your boatman will comment on what he’s doing, show you how it’s done, explain how the gas reacts, the conditions required and the difficulties involved in maintaining the flames. No tricks, no staging: just the experience of an enthusiast who knows the Marais Poitevin like the back of his hand!

Your guides, your allies

Without them, the magic won’t work!

The guides boatmen
Marsh guardians

As part of your adventure, the boatmen reveal the mysteries of the Marais Poitevin with passion and expertise. Often young and originally from the marsh, they work here for the duration of a summer job.

More than just guides, they are the true guardians of the marsh!

Prepare your mission!
  • Is fire on water dangerous?

No. The flame is very short, not very intense and is carried out by trained boatmen. It’s totally under control and poses no danger to you.

At worst, there may be a slight smell of “grilled pig” if the boatman’s hair gets a little hot… but I promise, they’re used to it!

  • Is the fire on the water visible on every guided outing?

Yes, the boatmen generally plan the demonstration.

However, it depends on the presence of gas in the mud and the conditions at the time. The boatman does his best, but nothing is guaranteed – and that’s what makes it such an exceptional moment.

  • Can you do this experiment on your own?

You can always try… but there are no guarantees.

Fire on water requires knowing the right places where methane gas is present and mastering the precise gesture to bring up the bubbles. Boatmen, on the other hand, have the eye and the technique: with them, the chances of seeing the flame are much higher.

  • What time of day is the fire on the water?

During the day, during the tour. There is no “special” time slot: this is a one-off demonstration integrated into the guided boat trip.
