A pupil of Saint-Saëns and Gustave Lefèvre at the École Niedermeyer, he initially served as choirmaster at the Église de la Madeleine in Paris. He was Ravel’s teacher.

• Maurice Ravel was a French composer born in Ciboure on 7 March 1875 and died in the 16th arrondissement of Paris on 28 December 1937. Alongside his elder contemporary Claude Debussy, Ravel was the most influential figure in French music at the beginning of the 20th century.
