Description
An event organised as part of the European Heritage Days by the ‘Ville d’art et d’histoire’ department of Fontenay-le-Comte.
Guided by pupils from the Lycée Notre-Dame, you will explore the history and architecture of these two iconic sites in Fontenay-le-Comte.
In the heart of the town, Place Belliard bears witness to Fontenay-le-Comte’s urban development, encompassing commercial functions, public life and the successive transformations that have shaped its identity.
Just a short walk away, the former Château-Gaillard mansion — also known as Moriceau de Cheusse — was rebuilt between 1811 and 1816 on the foundations of the house that burnt down in 1795. Its monumental gateway, listed as a Historic Monument, features a remarkable sculpted ensemble depicting Laocoön and his sons, Diana the Huntress and Hercules confronting the Nemean lion.
