An event organised as part of the European Heritage Days by the ‘Ville d’art et d’histoire’ department of Fontenay-le-Comte.

Construction began in 1423, building upon an earlier Romanesque structure; the Church of Notre-Dame stands as a testament to the town’s economic, political and intellectual prosperity. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1862, the building is distinguished by the Gothic elegance of its flamboyant spire, which stands 82.50 metres high. A conservation programme has been launched by the current local council, and the first phase of works began in 2023 to mark the building’s 600th anniversary. Thanks to the involvement of the parish and pupils from Notre-Dame High School, guided tours of the church and its crypt will be available. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to discover the hidden treasures of Notre-Dame Church! Admission is free, subject to the capacity limits of certain rooms within the building. Outside the visiting times indicated above, the church will not be accessible due to religious services. Tour of the Crypt: Come and discover the 11th-century crypt of Notre-Dame Church, a jewel of early Romanesque architecture. Rediscovered by chance on 17 January 1846 during work in the church’s nave, a part of Fontenay’s history thus came to light, even though it had been largely forgotten.
