Rencontres culturelles du printemps - Conference / Concert :
The story of a Michelais who left for Canada in 1910
Today, 7 June, it's high time we told you about one of the many events on the Fontenay-le-Comte region's rich calendar. Here's a suggestion for next Friday in Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq, a lecture-concert organised by the town hall as part of the Rencontres culturelles du printemps.
Christian Etié, a lawyer and painter known in our region for his 'Re-Naissance' exhibitions, is the great-nephew of Alexandre Pothier, a migrant from Saint-Michel who left for Canada in 1910. Like so many Europeans, his great-grand-uncle from Vendée wanted to reach the great prairies, the promised land of a better life, in the distant horizons of a new Canadian province, Saskatshewan.
This story will be told by the Etié family, who are involved in this quest for memory, while I will provide the background to these European migrations across the Atlantic.
It's a truly historical and geopolitical subject, given the large number of people from the Vendée who came to Canada at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a theme that I've discovered so that I can soon tell you about the French-speaking islands that still exist in the great western Canada...
Following this talk, a concert by composer Fabrice Pannetier will introduce you to his electronic music and video creations. Cf attachment
Friday 12 June, 6.30pm at the Salle des Fêtes in Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq.
Admission free, participation by hat.
