In the heart of the Vendée bocage, the keep at Bazoges-en-Pareds opens the doors to the living Middle Ages. Stroll through five furnished levels, from the defensive ground floor to the 30-metre high sentry walk. The programme

Life in the Middle Ages

Your guide will immerse you in the daily life of the lords of Bazoges-en-Pareds. Defence of the site, food, hygiene, organisation of domestic life: each room in the keep sheds light on the realities of the Middle Ages. It’s a lively, accessible approach packed with anecdotes.

The medieval garden

Below the keep, the garden offers a sensory interlude. Arranged in squares, it features aromatic, medicinal, vegetable and dye plants. The tour provides an understanding of their dietary and therapeutic uses, not forgetting the XVIᵉ century dovecote.

A leap into the XIXᵉ century

At the foot of the keep, the museum of folk art and traditions completes the visit. Housed in a late 19th-century Vendée farmhouse, it reveals the rural life of yesteryear.
